Badge Login¶
Badge Login allows staff to quickly sign in by tapping an RFID or NFC card on a USB reader connected to the computer. This is ideal for shared workstations where multiple employees need fast access without typing passwords each time.
How it works¶
A USB contactless card reader is connected to the computer. The reader acts like a keyboard and types the card’s unique ID when a card is tapped.
The badge login screen automatically captures the card ID.
Gem Logic matches the card ID to a user account and signs them.
After signing in via badge, the session is monitored for inactivity. If no activity is detected for the configured timeout period, the user is automatically signed out and returned to the badge login screen.
Setup¶
Hardware¶
You need:
A USB RFID/NFC reader that operates in keyboard-wedge mode (types the card ID as keystrokes followed by Enter).
RFID/NFC cards or keyfobs, one per employee.
Most USB contactless readers from common vendors work out of the box — no special drivers or software are required.
Enabling badge login for a user¶
Badge login is enabled on a per-user basis. Only admins can configure this.
Navigate to and click on the user.
In the user detail page, toggle Badge login required to on.
In the Badges section, click Add badge.
Tap the card on the reader to capture the badge ID, then save.
A user can have multiple badges assigned (e.g., a card and a keyfob).
Important
When Badge login required is enabled for a user, they must use their badge to sign in. They will also be automatically signed out after a period of inactivity.
Users without this setting enabled are not affected and continue to sign in normally with their email and password.
Inactivity timeout¶
When a badge-login user is signed in, Gem Logic monitors for inactivity:
A warning banner appears 30 seconds before the session expires.
If no activity is detected within the timeout period, the user is automatically signed out and redirected to the badge login screen.
Activity is defined as mouse movement, keyboard input, clicks, touch, or scrolling. Background processes such as automatic data refreshes do not count as activity.
Note
The timeout is set to 3 minutes by default. Contact Gem Logic support if you need to adjust this for your business.
Signing out¶
Badge-login users can also sign out manually at any time using the Log out button. They will be redirected to the badge login screen where the next employee can tap their card.
Users without badge login enabled are redirected to the standard sign-in page instead.
Security considerations¶
Badge login is designed for convenience on trusted in-store workstations. Keep in mind:
For full account security, use a strong password combined with multi-factor authentication (MFA) for admin accounts.
Badge login is best suited as a quick-access method for day-to-day operations on shared computers at your location.
